Tree Service Eureka MO
Most Eureka trees stand on a slope with other trees around them, so they come down in pieces on ropes. Clearing more than 10 percent of a lot’s trees in two years can need a city permit.

What Do Eureka’s Hills and Woods Mean for a Tree Job?
They mean the tree usually cannot be dropped whole, and getting to it is half the work. Eureka sits along I-44 at the southwestern end of St. Louis County. The city’s own profile says Route 66 State Park and Greensfelder County Park lie adjacent to it. Off the Allenton exit of I-44, the Department of Conservation’s Rockwoods Range covers 1,453 acres that MDC describes as mostly forested, with limestone outcrops, springs and sinkholes.
The names on the map tell the same story: Bald Hill Road, Misty Mountain Lane, Vista Hills Court, Hilltop Park, the Emerald Forest subdivision. The city has grown by annexation from about 2.7 square miles at incorporation in 1954 to about 10.45 today.
What that does to the work
A tree on a slope with a house below it is climbed and taken apart in sections, each piece lowered on a rope so nothing rolls downhill. The truck and chipper may have to stay at the top of a steep drive. Thompson Tree Care and Landscaping checks the grade and the drive during the free estimate, and says so when large tree removal with a crane is the safer route.
What it does to the trees
Hillside trees often lean downhill from the start. An old lean is not the worry. A new lean, cracked soil on the uphill side or lifted roots are. See when a leaning tree is a problem.
Which Trees Fill Eureka’s Woods, and What Kills Them?
Oaks, mostly, and oak wilt is the one to plan around. MDC calls nearby Rockwoods Reservation “a sample of the Ozarks,” with white oaks, flowering dogwood, dry rocky ridge tops and cool north-facing ravines. Its field guide puts black oak on dry upland ridges and slopes and notes the species is declining.
Oak wilt hits the red oak group hardest. MDC says an infected red oak can drop its leaves within two to six weeks and die within a year, and that the fungus moves through root grafts to nearby oaks of the same kind. Where oaks stand shoulder to shoulder, one infected tree puts its neighbors at risk. That is why trimming and pruning of oaks belongs in the dormant months. Our article on oak wilt symptoms and treatment covers what to look for.
How High Has the Meramec Come in Old Town Eureka?
Higher than 46 feet, twice in a year and a half. The gauge near Eureka has a flood stage of 19 feet. It crested at 46.06 feet on December 30, 2015, more than three feet over the 1982 record, and then at 46.11 feet on May 3, 2017, which still stands.
National Weather Service impact notes for that gauge put water in numerous businesses along Central Avenue in old town at 43 feet, and close Highway 109 at Eureka High School at about 40. Lower down, homes on Willman Road and West Spring River Ranch Road start taking water around 28 to 34 feet, the pavilion at Kircher Park at about 30, and roads inside Route 66 State Park at 27.
Houses up on the hills are out of its reach. In the bottom, a flood leaves two tree problems. Soaked ground lets a tall tree tip over roots and all, sometimes days after the water drops. Drift scars trunks at the waterline, which opens the way for rot. A tree down on a house or drive is work for our 24/7 emergency tree service.
What Do Eureka’s Tree Rules Cover, and Who Do You Call?
Eureka regulates public trees, hazardous dead trees and large-scale clearing. We found no general permit for taking down one yard tree in the code as of October 2026. Confirm with the office named.
| Situation | What the code says | Who to call |
|---|---|---|
| One or a few trees on your lot | No tree permit in the Eureka Tree Ordinance. The 10 percent rule in section 10B-3 may apply. | Building Department, (636) 938-5233 |
| Clearing on a site over one acre | Land disturbance permit, with clearing limits staked and approved first (section 10B-2). Fines run up to $750 a day. | Building Department |
| Tree along a city street or in a park | The city plants, prunes and removes these (section 2-109). Topping one is unlawful (section 2-111). | Parks and Recreation, (636) 938-6775 |
| Dead or diseased tree that is a hazard | The city can order removal within 60 days (section 2-112). | City Hall, (636) 938-5233 |
If the city sends a notice, see dangerous tree removal.
Who Clears Trees From Power Lines in Eureka?
Ameren, on its own lines. The city’s Guide to Local Services lists Ameren for electric service at 1-800-552-7583. Ameren trims only in its rights-of-way and easements. The line from the pole to your house is yours to keep clear, and Ameren will disconnect it by appointment so a tree service can work near it. If yours runs through trees to reach the house, check it before storm season.
Eureka is in the Thompson Tree Care and Landscaping service area, as are Wildwood to the north and Fenton farther down the Meramec. Our shop is in south St. Louis County, and we carry proof of insurance for a city or HOA application.

Wooded-Lot Questions From Eureka
Only up to a point. Section 10B-3 of the Eureka code prohibits destroying more than 10 percent of the trees on a parcel covered by the land disturbance chapter within any two-year period without a land disturbance permit. Ask the Building Department, (636) 938-5233, how it applies to your lot before you start.
Yes. Under section 2-112 of the Eureka Tree Ordinance the city may require removal of a dead or diseased tree on private property when it is a hazard to life and property or harbors insects or disease that threaten other trees. The owner gets written notice and has 60 days to remove it at their own expense. After that the city can do the work and bill the owner or add the cost to the property tax notice.
Outside mid-March through June. The Missouri Department of Conservation says not to prune oaks in that window because the beetles that carry oak wilt are drawn to fresh wounds. If a storm breaks an oak limb in spring, MDC says to put wound dressing on the fresh wound right away.
Only small, bundled material. The city’s service guide says tree trimmings and brush must be tied in bundles no more than four feet long, with limbs no more than six inches thick. A bundle may not be over 18 inches across or 60 pounds, and yard waste is capped at 20 bags or bundles. Trunk wood and a whole tree’s brush are chipped and hauled by the tree crew.
